The appointment of 61 new government advocates to the High Court has become a major talking point among the legal fraternity. On Monday, following Bangalore Mirror’s story (Govt proposes sacking of its legal team), the HC corridors were abuzz with speculation over the new law officers.
According to sources, the file forwarded to the chief minister by the law department has the name of Narayana Reddy as SPP 1 and BT Venkatesh as SPP 2. KR Keshavamurthy’s name is learnt to have been recommended for the post of Additional SPP. The principal government advocate in the HC, according to sources, will be AS Ponnanna.
Current SPP Dore Raju has completed nine months of his two-year term; if replaced, he will lose out on the remainder of his term. In the absence of any complaint against him, he is said to be unhappy at the request for his resignation and could well seek legal recourse. He was the SPP on an earlier occasion as well before being appointed to the post again in January this year. In political circles, he is known as the person who brought together BS Yeddyurappa and HD Kumaraswamy to form a coalition government seven years ago.
